  • Official Language: Lao (Laotian)

    Common Languages: Hmong, Khmer, Yao, and Chinese are found spoken variably throughout the country

    Lao Phrases:
    Sabaidee (ສະບາຍດີ) - Hello / How are you?
    Khop chai (ຂອບໃຈ) - Thank you
    Baw pen nyang (ບໍ່ເປັນແນວ) - You're welcome / It's nothing
    Khonyak (ຂໍໃຫ້) - Please
    Tao dai? (ເທົ່າໃດ?) - How much does it cost?

  • Greetings: Laotians often greet each other with a "wai," a gesture involving placing the palms together and bowing slightly

    Dress Modestly: Dress conservatively, especially when visiting temples or religious sites. Covering your shoulders and knees is important. Avoid wearing revealing clothing.

    Respect Monks: Monks are highly respected in Lao society. If you are a woman, avoid physical contact with monks. When passing something to a monk, use both hands or place the item on a nearby surface rather than handing it directly.

    Public Displays of Affection: Public displays of affection, such as kissing or hugging, are generally frowned upon. Maintain a respectful distance in public settings.

    Respect for Traditions: Participate respectfully in local traditions and ceremonies. For instance, when visiting temples, walk clockwise around Buddha statues and avoid touching or climbing on them.

    Photographs: Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people, especially monks or in sacred areas. Some places may have restrictions on photography.
